GLM-4 was unveiled at Zhipu AI's first DevDay in January 2024 as the company's fourth-generation foundation model. Zhipu claimed near-parity with GPT-4 overall, with stronger Chinese-language performance, a 128K-token context window, and an 'All Tools' agent mode that autonomously plans and calls browsers, code interpreters, and image generators.
GLM-4 is a closed, API-only model served through Zhipu's BigModel platform and the Qingyan chat app. It marked the moment a Chinese lab credibly claimed GPT-4-class capability, and Zhipu has since iterated through GLM-4.5 to the GLM-5 series.
