About
Gemma 7B launched together with Gemma 2B in February 2024 as Google's first family of open models derived from Gemini research. It is the larger of the two first-generation models and was positioned against contemporaries like Mistral 7B and Llama 2 7B, with Google reporting strong benchmark results for its size class.
Like the rest of the Gemma line it is an open-weights release under the Gemma Terms of Use, not an OSI-approved open-source license, and it comes in base and instruction-tuned flavors. It is distinct from the later Gemma 2 9B generation.
