Viking 13B

Viking 13B is the mid-size model in Silo AI's Viking family, developed with the TurkuNLP group at the University of Turku and HPLT, with pre-release checkpoints published in April 2024. Trained on the LUMI supercomputer in Finland, it covers Danish, English, Finnish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Swedish, and programming languages, succeeding Silo's earlier Poro models.

Released as a fully open model under Apache 2.0, Viking was reported best-in-class among open models for low-resource Nordic languages without sacrificing English or code performance. As a base model it needs fine-tuning for most applications, but it remains a landmark of European digital sovereignty efforts in AI.
