About

TxGemma is a collection of lightweight open language models for therapeutics, released by Google in March 2025 in 2B, 9B, and 27B sizes based on the Gemma 2 family. Fine-tuned on the Therapeutics Data Commons, the models were validated across 66 therapeutic tasks spanning drug discovery and development, matching or beating best-in-class specialist models on 50 of 66 tasks. Chat variants mix therapeutic and general instruction data for conversational use, and starter Colabs cover inference, fine-tuning, and agentic workflows.

Limitations: explicitly a research model — Google notes it requires refinement and validation with research partners and regulators before any clinical-adjacent use. Best performance needs prompts formatted to the TDC structure, including SMILES strings and amino acid sequences where relevant.
