Launched in August 2023 by Nixtla, TimeGPT-1 was the first foundation model for time-series forecasting: a generative pre-trained transformer trained on over 100 billion data points that forecasts retail, electricity, finance, and IoT series with a few lines of code, no ML expertise required. It kicked off the time-series foundation-model wave later joined by Google's TimesFM, Amazon's Chronos, and Salesforce's Moirai.
Limitations: closed-source and API-only — no downloadable weights; forecasting accuracy claims are vendor-reported.
