Qwen2.5-VL-32B
The 32B open vision-language model Alibaba dropped in March 2025, GPT-4-class vision.
About
Qwen2.5-VL-32B-Instruct arrived on March 24, 2025 as a surprise addition to the Qwen2.5-VL family, slotting between the 7B and 72B sizes under Apache 2.0. Alibaba positioned it as the GPT-4-class-capable open VLM that still fits on a well-equipped workstation: stronger mathematical reasoning, better alignment with human preferences, and sharper image parsing and visual logic than the January 2.5-VL releases. Reviewers at launch called the 32B size the new sweet spot for open vision models.
The honest picture: benchmark comparisons at launch were Alibaba's own selections, so treat the GPT-4-class framing as marketing rather than independent verdict. At 32B it needs serious VRAM (roughly 64GB unquantized), making quantized builds or API access the practical route for most users. It has since been eclipsed by Qwen3-VL-32B, but the 2.5 32B remains a stable, well-supported choice with mature tooling.
