About
MuseNet was OpenAI's first public step into music: a deep neural network announced in April 2019 that could generate four-minute compositions using ten different instruments and blend styles from country to Mozart to the Beatles. Under the hood it was a 72-layer Sparse Transformer doing GPT-2-style next-token prediction, trained on hundreds of thousands of MIDI files donated by ClassicalArchives and BitMidi plus the MAESTRO dataset and various jazz, pop, African, Indian and Arabic collections.
The interactive demo was always a limited prototype. It ran for feedback only until mid-May 2019 and was never productized, and OpenAI never released weights or code. MuseNet reads today as a historical artifact: impressive for 2019, openly rough at longer durations, and the direct ancestor of Jukebox a year later.

Use cases
Trust score — 6/10
Scored 6/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: OpenAI research demo from April 2019 with documented architecture and training data. Strengths: historically significant, style-blending concept, transparent about training sources. Docked for: (1) retired demo, no weights, code or API; (2) superseded by Jukebox and everything after. License: proprietary research demo, discontinued.
