About

DeepSpeech was Mozilla's open-source speech-to-text engine, a TensorFlow implementation inspired by Baidu's Deep Speech research paper. It shipped pre-trained English models with Python, Node.js and C++ bindings plus TFLite export for on-device use, and gathered 26,800 GitHub stars and 4,100 forks. Development effectively stopped in 2021 (last releases v0.9.3 in December 2020 and v0.10 alphas), and Mozilla archived the repository read-only in June 2025. Its lineage lives on: Coqui STT was built from it by the ex-Mozilla ML team, and community forks such as MBAZA-NLP's Kinyarwanda ASR keep it running for specific languages.

Trust score — 6/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 6/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: mozilla/DeepSpeech repo verified archived read-only (June 19, 2025) with 26.8k stars; MPL-2.0 license confirmed via GitHub API; pretrained models still downloadable. Strengths: fully open weights and code, enormous historical adoption, fork lineage (Coqui STT). Docked for: (1) zero maintenance since 2021 — no security or compatibility fixes; (2) accuracy far behind current models. License: MPL-2.0.
