Mistral Large was released on February 26, 2024 as Mistral AI's first top-tier closed model, positioned against GPT-4 and Claude 3 Opus. It launched together with le Chat, Mistral's consumer assistant, and a Microsoft partnership that made the model available on Azure.
Unlike Mistral's open-weight releases (Mistral 7B, Mixtral), Mistral Large is API-only with no public weights. It demonstrated that a European lab could compete at the frontier, and its 32K-token context and strong multilingual reasoning made it a staple of enterprise deployments in 2024.
