About

The Midjourney Editor is the web-based editing surface on midjourney.com for images Midjourney generated. Introduced alongside V6, it lets you open an image and brush, mask, inpaint a selected region, outpaint beyond the frame, or work with layers directly on the canvas. The earlier Vary (Region) tool from 2023 already let users regenerate parts of an upscaled image with a new prompt; the Editor generalized that into a Photoshop-style workspace. A newer --edit mode on recent versions accepts conversational instructions, reportedly routing them through an understanding step before the image model acts.

Editing stays inside Midjourney's subscription and only applies to its own generations, which is both its strength and its limit: edits inherit Midjourney's distinctive aesthetic, but you cannot bring in arbitrary external photos. There is no official public API; third-party wrappers expose inpainting-like endpoints unofficially. Best results come from editing larger regions (roughly 20 to 50 percent of the image) consistent with the original context.

Trust score — 8/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 8/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: Vary (Region) launch covered by TechRadar, Decrypt, and Beebom; Editor capabilities (brush, mask, inpaint, outpaint, layers) documented in user guides; official site midjourney.com. Strengths: tightly integrated with the leading aesthetic image model, mature editor UX, huge user base. Docked for: (1) closed model with no public API; (2) works only on Midjourney's own generations, not arbitrary uploads; (3) independent hands-on tests found it less precise than Stable Diffusion inpainting on small regions. License: proprietary.
