GPT Image 2
OpenAI's high-fidelity image generation and editing model.
About
GPT Image 2, released April 21, 2026 alongside the ChatGPT Images 2.0 experience, is OpenAI's state-of-the-art image generation model and the successor to GPT Image 1. It combines strong photorealism with multilingual text coherence and precise instruction following, and was described at launch as applying thinking-level reasoning to visual construction. It supports text-to-image generation and image editing through the Images API.
The line continued with GPT Image 2.5 on September 8, 2026, shipped as two API models: Flare, the fast everyday default, and Sunburst, tuned for editing precision and the default on the edits endpoint. OpenAI announced that GPT Image 1 would shut down on October 23, 2026, naming GPT Image 2 as its replacement. Output goes up to 3840x2160, with edits accepting up to 16 input images.
