GPT-4o mini
The cheap-and-fast frontier small model: 128K context, multimodal input.
About
GPT-4o mini, released July 18, 2024, is OpenAI's cost-efficient small model: much of GPT-4o's intelligence (including vision input and tool calling) at a fraction of the price — $0.15/$0.60 per 1M input/output tokens at release, roughly 60% cheaper than the GPT-3.5 Turbo it replaced in ChatGPT. 128K-token context, proprietary/closed weights, available via the OpenAI API, Azure OpenAI, and ChatGPT. It became the default for high-volume classification, extraction, and agent sub-tasks where GPT-4o would be overkill.

Benchmarks
At release (OpenAI, Jul 2024): 82.0 MMLU, 87.0 MGSM, 59.8 HumanEval — ahead of GPT-3.5 Turbo and competitive with larger peers on reasoning; provider-reported. Now a mature workhorse rather than a frontier model.
Provider-reported unless a source says otherwise. Benchmarks are marketing-adjacent by nature — treat them as directional.
Use cases
Trust score — 7/10
Scored 7/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: provider-tier estimate — thinner evidence (no public adoption metric); released 817 days ago. Manual review: high-volume workhorse (128K, multimodal input, $0.15/$0.60 per 1M at release); pricing/snapshots shift — verify live. License: Proprietary — closed weights.
