About

Chirp 3 is Google Cloud's HD voice model for the Cloud Text-to-Speech API, announced March 17, 2025 at the Gemini for the UK event and generally available that April. It is a Gemini-based generative TTS model that ships as 'Chirp 3: HD voices' — eight speakers across 31 locales at launch (248 voices), with pace control, pause control and custom pronunciations added in later 2025 updates. Google positions it as its highest-quality cloud TTS, with noticeably more natural prosody than the older WaveNet and Neural2 voices.

It costs $30 per million characters with 1 million characters a month free; for comparison, WaveNet and Neural2 sit at $16 per million and standard voices at $4. It supports real-time streaming and batch synthesis through the Cloud TTS API and Vertex AI. No independent benchmarks have been published — the quality case is Google's own positioning plus broad developer uptake.
