Gemini Embedding went experimental in March 2025 and generally available in July 2025 on the Gemini API and Vertex AI. Google positions it as the unified successor to text-embedding-005 and text-multilingual-embedding-002, with up to 3072 dimensions and 100+ languages. It has held the top of the MTEB multilingual leaderboard since its experimental launch. API-only, so self-hosting is not an option.
