FLUX.1 Fill
Mask-based inpainting and outpainting built on the FLUX.1 image model, filling selected regions so the new content matches the surrounding scene.
About
FLUX.1 Fill is the inpainting and outpainting arm of the FLUX.1 Tools suite, released by Black Forest Labs in November 2024. It takes an input image, a binary mask, and a text prompt, then generates content for the masked area that blends with the unedited regions in lighting, texture, and perspective. The same pipeline handles outpainting, extending an image beyond its original frame. It is offered in two flavors: Fill [dev], with open weights on Hugging Face under the FLUX.1-dev non-commercial license, and Fill [pro], available through BFL's API.
BFL's launch materials claimed Fill surpasses Ideogram 2.0 for these editing tasks, which is a provider claim rather than an independent result. The [dev] weights make it one of the few strong inpainting models you can self-host, with a Gradio demo and a diffusers-friendly workflow circulating in the community, while [pro] targets production pipelines through the official API.

Benchmarks
Provider-claimed: BFL states Fill surpasses Ideogram 2.0 on inpainting/outpainting at launch (Nov 2024). No independent benchmarks found
Provider-reported unless a source says otherwise. Benchmarks are marketing-adjacent by nature — treat them as directional.
Use cases
Trust score — 8/10
Scored 8/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: BFL's flux repo docs confirm Fill [dev] on Hugging Face under the FLUX.1-dev non-commercial license and Fill [pro] as API-only; API docs at docs.bfl.ai list flux-pro-1.0-fill for inpainting. Strengths: real shipped product from an established lab, open [dev] weights, clear mask-based workflow. Docked for: (1) quality claims vs Ideogram 2.0 are provider-reported with no independent benchmark; (2) [pro] pricing per model not published on the docs page; (3) [dev] weights are non-commercial, limiting production use. License: FLUX.1-dev Non-Commercial for [dev] weights; proprietary for [pro].
