About

Command R is Cohere For AI's research release of a 35-billion-parameter model optimized for retrieval-augmented generation, summarization, question answering, and tool use. The original v01 landed in March 2024 with an 08-2024 refresh following; it generates in multiple languages (trained on 23, evaluated on 10) and carries a 128K context window, with strong citation-grounded generation for its size. The license is CC-BY-NC plus an acceptable use policy, so it is research and non-commercial use only — anyone shipping commercially needs Cohere's hosted API instead. For RAG prototypes and multilingual research where the license fits, it remains a solid, well-documented choice.
