Claude 2 launched on July 11, 2023, with a headline feature no competitor could match at the time: a 100,000-token context window, roughly 75,000 words. While GPT-4 handled 8K-32K tokens, Claude 2 could ingest entire novels, codebases, or hundreds of pages of legal documents in a single prompt, opening use cases around long-document analysis that defined the next year of LLM competition.
It also brought substantially improved coding and reasoning over Claude 1, and was the first Claude available to the public at claude.ai. Claude 2.1 followed in November 2023 with 200K context. Like all Claude models, it is proprietary and API-only; weights were never released.
