About

zsh-ai is a tiny, dependency-free zsh plugin that turns a shell comment into a command. Type # followed by a plain-language description of the job, press Enter, and the generated command appears in your prompt for you to read, edit, and run yourself.

It stays on the command line instead of sending you to a search result: it sends useful context with each request, including project type, nearby files, git state, and OS, so a request like run tests becomes the right command for the directory you are already in. It is small by design: zsh plus curl and perl, with no Node or Python runtime, and it supports Ollama for fully local models.

What it can do

  • Generates shell commands from natural-language comments
  • Sends project context: files, git state, OS, project type
  • Supports Ollama for fully local, private generation
  • Never executes commands for you; you review first

Setup

brew install matheusml/zsh-ai/zsh-ai, export your API key in ~/.zshrc, then source the plugin.

Prerequisites

zsh 5.9+, curl on PATH, and an Anthropic/OpenAI API key or a local Ollama setup.
