YugabyteDB
Open-source distributed SQL database, PostgreSQL-compatible and AI-ready.
About
YugabyteDB is an open-source distributed SQL database that combines a PostgreSQL-compatible query layer with a Google Spanner-inspired distributed storage engine: auto-sharding, per-shard consensus replication, and multi-shard ACID transactions. Applications get horizontal scale and multi-region resilience while talking plain Postgres.
Founded in 2016 by former Facebook and Oracle engineers, Yugabyte is backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners, 8VC, Dell Technologies Capital, and Sapphire Ventures. The company positions YugabyteDB for AI-era workloads with vector indexing support that avoids vendor lock-in to any single LLM or index algorithm, and it recently joined the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation as a Silver Member. It deploys across public clouds, private data centers, and Kubernetes, with a managed Aeon cloud offering.
What it can do
- PostgreSQL wire compatibility with distributed ACID transactions
- Horizontal scaling, auto-sharding, and multi-region replication
- Vector indexing support for AI and RAG workloads
- Deploys on any cloud, on-prem, or Kubernetes with a managed option
Setup
Run locally with docker or the yb-ctl utility, deploy on Kubernetes with the operator, or sign up for the managed YugabyteDB Aeon cloud.
Prerequisites
Familiarity with PostgreSQL; a workload needing scale-out or multi-region writes.
