About

Xata is an open-source, cloud-native Postgres platform (github.com/xataio/xata) built on Kubernetes with CloudNativePG and OpenEBS: every database gets instant copy-on-write branching (clone terabytes in seconds), scale-to-zero compute that wakes on connection, autoscaling with bin-packing, high availability with automatic failover, and point-in-time recovery to object storage. A serverless SQL driver serves queries over HTTP/websockets for edge runtimes, and REST APIs plus a CLI manage the control plane with RBAC API keys. It powers the managed Xata Cloud service, and the self-hosted path is genuinely production-used at scale.

The honest caveat: self-hosting means running Kubernetes — the open-source story is real but operationally heavy compared to Neon's 'just a connection string'. The managed Xata Cloud is less well-known than Neon/Supabase, so community examples and third-party integrations are thinner. Teams wanting a full backend (auth, storage, realtime) should pick Supabase instead; Xata is deliberately database-only.

What it can do

  • Copy-on-write branching — clone any database in seconds
  • Scale-to-zero compute with automatic wakeup
  • HA with automatic failover and PITR backups
  • Serverless SQL driver over HTTP/websockets
  • REST management API and CLI with RBAC keys

Setup

For managed: sign up at xata.io and grab the Postgres connection string. For self-hosted: deploy to Kubernetes via the xataio/xata repo (Kind + Tilt for local dev), then curl -fsSL https://xata.io/install.sh | bash for the CLI.

Prerequisites

Managed: none. Self-hosted: a Kubernetes cluster, kubectl, and comfort operating CloudNativePG.
