About

WSO2 API Manager is a fully open-source (Apache 2.0) API management platform covering design, publishing, versioning, security, throttling, analytics, and developer portals, deployable on-prem, in the cloud, or hybrid. The modern lineup pairs the classic control plane with WSO2 APK, a Kubernetes-native Envoy-based gateway, plus an AI Gateway for governing LLM API traffic and Bijira, WSO2's managed SaaS offering.

WSO2 was founded in 2005 by Sanjiva Weerawarana and became one of the longest-running open-source middleware vendors; private equity firm EQT acquired the company in 2024. Releases are Apache-licensed with commercial subscriptions (24x7 support, WSO2 Update delivery) sold separately under unified pricing. The current generation (4.7.x line) adds personal access tokens, per-environment mTLS settings, and Moesif-powered analytics. It is Java-heavy and enterprise-shaped: the most capable free option in the classic APIM category, but with a steeper operational footprint than lightweight gateways.

What it can do

  • Full API lifecycle: design, publish, version, deprecate
  • WSO2 APK Kubernetes-native Envoy gateway
  • AI Gateway for LLM API governance
  • OAuth2 scopes, mTLS, and policy enforcement
  • Developer and publisher portals
  • API monetization and Moesif analytics

Setup

Download the 4.7.x all-in-one pack (Java 17+) or deploy the Helm charts on Kubernetes; run the quickstart to publish your first API.

Prerequisites

Java 17 runtime for the all-in-one; Kubernetes for WSO2 APK.

Trust score — 8/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 8/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: Apache 2.0 licensing and release contents confirmed via press releases and GitHub; EQT acquisition is a matter of public record. Strengths: genuinely 100% open source with no license fees, mature enterprise feature set, modern K8s-native gateway track. Docked for: (1) heavyweight Java stack with a bigger operational footprint than Go/Envoy gateways; (2) enterprise-grade depth comes with enterprise-grade complexity; (3) corporate ownership changed hands in 2024. License: Apache-2.0.
