About

Windscribe is a Toronto-based VPN founded in 2016 by Yegor Sak, Alex Paguis, and Mark Ulicki, independently owned with no outside investors. Its free plan is the strongest among the big commercial VPNs: 10GB a month once you confirm an email (2GB without), covering unlimited devices at once, with the R.O.B.E.R.T. ad and tracker filter included. Paid Pro costs $5.75 a month annually or $9 monthly, and the Build-A-Plan option lets you pay from $3 a month for only the server locations you want. Everything runs on RAM-only servers since the company's Ukrainian servers were seized unencrypted in July 2021, which could have exposed user traffic.

The privacy record has teeth beyond audits. PacketLabs audited the server software in June 2024, Leviathan audited the apps in 2021 and 2022, and in a 2025 Greek court case the company had no user logs to hand over, which is the strongest real-world test of a no-logs claim. Speeds test well for the price, and the service includes Stealth, WStunnel, and AmneziaWG protocols for censorship-heavy networks. The downsides are the obvious ones: Canada is a Five Eyes member, P2P is restricted on the free tier, and the interface has a learning curve. Renewal pricing and some slow distant servers are the usual complaints. No published independent benchmarks for the post-2024 infrastructure beyond third-party review speed tests.

Trust score — 8/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 8/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: 2026 reviews confirm the 10GB free tier with unlimited devices, $5.75/mo annual Pro, R.O.B.E.R.T. blocking, RAM-only servers, PacketLabs and Leviathan audits, and the 2025 Greek court case where no logs existed to hand over; also the 2021 Ukrainian server seizure while unencrypted. Strengths: the most generous honest free plan plus court-tested no-logs. Docked for: (1) Canada is a Five Eyes member; (2) the 2021 unencrypted-server seizure is a real historical incident; (3) free tier caps P2P and some distant servers are slow. License: proprietary service with open-source apps.
