Wildlife Insights

Google AI cloud platform for camera-trap image classification and wildlife data

Visit official site →

About

Wildlife Insights lets conservation scientists upload camera-trap photos to Google Cloud and run Google's species-identification AI over them, then collaborate, map wildlife, and track species population health. It doubles as the world's largest public camera-trap database, with millions of images filterable by species, country, and year. Google reported classification speeds up to 3,000 times faster than manual labeling, with prediction accuracy between 80% and 98.6% depending on species; the platform is free and run with seven leading conservation organizations.

What it can do

  • AI species classification over camera-trap images
  • Automatic removal of high-confidence empty images
  • Public database of millions of camera-trap records
  • Mapping and visualization of species population health
  • Collaboration tools for research teams

Setup

  1. Request access at wildlifeinsights.org as a researcher or organization
  2. Upload camera-trap images to the Google Cloud-backed platform
  3. Run the AI species-identification model over the uploads
  4. Review predictions in the web interface and correct edge cases
  5. Share aggregated data or explore the public database by species and region
