Viam
Engineering platform unifying hardware, data, and AI for smart machines.
About
Viam is an engineering platform for data, AI, and automation in the physical world, founded in 2020 by MongoDB co-founder Eliot Horowitz. It gives developers one stack for smart machines: low-level hardware APIs, software algorithms, cloud connectivity, fleet management, remote monitoring, tele-operations, and predictive maintenance, spanning robotics, IoT, marine, manufacturing, and food service.
The company raised $30 million in Series C funding in March 2025 led by Union Square Ventures with Battery Ventures and Neurone participating, bringing total funding to $117 million. Customers include Viking Yachts, Kongsberg Discovery, Sbarro, Transmutex, and Appetronix, and Viam became the official AI technology partner of the New York Islanders and UBS Arena.
Caveats: the positioning is deliberately broad, which can mean longer evaluations to confirm fit for a specific robotics stack, and it competes with both the ROS open-source ecosystem and hyperscaler IoT offerings.
What it can do
- Unified hardware and software APIs
- Fleet management and monitoring
- Tele-operation and remote control
- ML model deployment to devices
- Data pipelines for smart machines
