Vercel AI SDK

The TypeScript toolkit for AI apps — unified provider API, streaming, tool calling, structured output.

About

The Vercel AI SDK is an open-source (MIT) TypeScript toolkit that has become the de facto standard for building streaming AI applications in React and Next.js. One unified API works across 20+ providers — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, Groq — so switching models is a one-line import change.

Core handles text generation and streaming, tool calling with Zod-validated schemas, structured object output, and multi-step agentic reasoning. The UI layer provides the useChat hook that manages the entire chat lifecycle, plus generative UI that streams React components from the server. Middleware supports logging, caching, and guardrails.

Worth knowing: it is a toolkit, not a framework — you still architect agents, memory, and orchestration yourself (Mastra or LangGraph sit well on top). It is also Next.js-optimized; non-React backends get less of the magic. But for shipping a streaming AI feature in a TypeScript app, nothing is faster.

What it can do

  • Unified generateText/streamText across 20+ providers
  • Tool calling with Zod schema validation
  • Structured output via generateObject/streamObject
  • useChat React hook with streaming state management
  • Generative UI — stream React components from the server

Setup

npm install ai plus a provider package like @ai-sdk/anthropic. Add a route handler returning result.toDataStreamResponse().

Prerequisites

Node.js 18+; an LLM provider API key; React/Next.js for the UI hooks.
