Turso
SQLite at the edge — libSQL databases replicated to 35+ regions with embedded local replicas.
Acquired — still operating
acquired by Supabase Oct 2026; platform continues
About
Turso rebuilt SQLite for the edge: on top of libSQL (their open-source SQLite fork) they run a cloud platform replicating databases to 35+ edge locations, so reads land in single-digit milliseconds worldwide. The killer feature is embedded replicas — your app reads from a local SQLite file at microsecond latency and syncs with the cloud primary, writes forwarding to primary. The free tier is generous (9GB storage, 500 databases, 25B row reads/month), branching works like git for databases, and Drizzle ORM integration is first-class. In October 2026 Supabase acquired Turso (alongside its $150M round led by GIC) to power short-lived AI-agent databases; founder Glauber Costa became Supabase's Head of Agentic Services, with the platform continuing to operate and libSQL staying open source.
The honest caveat: it is SQLite semantics — no stored procedures, limited types, single-writer WAL — so Postgres shops lose features moving over. Write latency is 15–50ms depending on distance to the primary region, making it a poor fit for write-heavy workloads. The Supabase acquisition is fresh; long-term roadmap independence is unproven, though both companies promise unchanged operations.
What it can do
- Globally replicated SQLite via libSQL across 35+ regions
- Embedded replicas: local reads, cloud-synced writes
- Database branching like git for databases
- HTTP API for serverless and edge runtimes
- Drizzle ORM and Prisma (preview adapter) support
Setup
Install the CLI: curl -sSfL https://get.tur.so/install.sh | bash, then turso auth login and turso db create my-app. Connect via @libsql/client with the libsql:// URL and auth token.
Prerequisites
Comfort with SQLite semantics. A Turso account for the cloud platform (free tier available).
