About
Turnitin is the most widely deployed academic integrity platform, used by over 15,000 institutions across 140+ countries. It is embedded directly into learning management systems like Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, and Google Classroom, so submissions are scanned automatically. Alongside its long-standing similarity (plagiarism) checking, Turnitin added AI writing detection in 2023: it reports the percentage of text likely AI-generated and, separately, AI-generated text that was paraphrased, with sentence-level highlighting above a 20% threshold. A February 2026 model update improved detection recall, including text run through paraphrasing and bypasser tools. Turnitin Clarity adds a writing workspace with AI chat guardrails and process visibility. Turnitin's own position is that AI scores should not be the sole basis for action against a student, and false positives remain a known limitation, especially at low scores.

Setup
Institutional product: the school or university licenses Turnitin and enables it inside its LMS. Students submit through the normal assignment flow; instructors review Similarity and AI reports in Feedback Studio.
