Turborepo
High-performance build system for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos, with intelligent caching.
About
Turborepo is Vercel's open-source build system for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos. It models your workspace as a task graph of builds, tests, and lint jobs, then runs them in the right order with maximum parallelism while skipping anything whose inputs have not changed, thanks to content-aware caching. Remote caching lets a whole team and CI share cache artifacts, so a build that ran on a teammate's laptop never reruns on yours.
Turborepo 2.x refined the configuration format and added features like package-scoped task configuration and a watcher mode. It plugs into your existing package manager (npm, pnpm, yarn, or Bun) rather than replacing it, which is why adoption skews toward teams that already have a monorepo and want faster CI without a rewrite. The project is MIT-licensed, maintained by Vercel, and widely used across the Next.js ecosystem.
What it can do
- Task-graph orchestration with parallel execution
- Content-aware local and remote caching
- Incremental builds, tests, and lint across workspaces
- Watcher mode and package-scoped task configuration
- Works with npm, pnpm, yarn, and Bun
Setup
Install per-workspace with npm install turbo --save-dev, add a turbo.json defining your task pipeline, then run turbo run build.
Prerequisites
Node.js 18+; a JavaScript/TypeScript monorepo with npm, pnpm, yarn, or Bun workspaces. Remote caching needs a Vercel account or a self-hosted cache.
