Triton Inference Server
NVIDIA's open-source serving standard for deploying any AI model on any GPU or CPU.
About
Triton Inference Server is NVIDIA's open-source model-serving platform — the closest thing the industry has to a standard deployment target for AI models. It serves models from TensorRT, PyTorch, TensorFlow, ONNX, Python, and more through a single server with HTTP/REST and gRPC endpoints, handling dynamic batching, concurrent model execution, and multi-GPU/multi-node scaling.
It is the serving layer underneath a huge share of production LLM and vision deployments: it supports streaming, model ensembles (chaining preprocessing → inference → postprocessing as one pipeline), and per-model configuration for max batch size, instance counts, and backends. The Model Analyzer and Perf Analyzer tools help you tune throughput and latency before you ship.
The honest caveat: Triton is powerful but heavyweight — the learning curve is real, the Docker images are large, and it shines brightest on NVIDIA hardware. For a quick single-model API, lighter options (vLLM, Ollama, BentoML) get you there faster; Triton pays off when you serve many models with strict latency SLOs.
What it can do
- Multi-framework serving: TensorRT, PyTorch, TensorFlow, ONNX, Python, and more via one server
- HTTP/REST + gRPC endpoints with streaming support
- Dynamic batching, concurrent execution, multi-GPU/multi-node scaling
- Model ensembles chaining preprocessing, inference, and postprocessing
- Perf Analyzer + Model Analyzer for latency/throughput tuning
- BSD-3 licensed; NVIDIA-maintained, ~11k GitHub stars
Setup
- Pull the Triton container:
docker pull nvcr.io/nvidia/tritonserver:<xx.yy>-py3. - Arrange models in a model repository (
model_repository/<model>/1/model.plan+config.pbtxt). - Launch:
docker run --gpus=all -p8000:8000 -p8001:8001 -v /models:/models nvcr.io/nvidia/tritonserver ... tritonserver --model-repository=/models. - Send requests to the HTTP (8000) or gRPC (8001) endpoints; tune with Perf Analyzer.
Prerequisites
Docker with NVIDIA Container Toolkit; an NVIDIA GPU (CPU-only possible but not the point); models exported to a supported backend format.
