Tokens Studio for Figma

Open-source design tokens plugin that makes Figma tokens a single source of truth.

About

Tokens Studio for Figma, formerly known as Figma Tokens, is the most widely used way to define and manage design tokens inside Figma. The plugin lets teams create color, typography, spacing, border-radius, and other tokens as granular, aliasable decisions, then apply them across files much like native styles but for every property. Tokens live as JSON and sync with providers like GitHub, so the same source of truth can flow into code through tools like Style Dictionary.

The project is open source under the MIT license and actively maintained on GitHub with over 1,600 stars, and the documentation at docs.tokens.studio covers everything from quick starts to multi-brand token pipelines. It is free as a Figma plugin, which makes it the default starting point for teams formalizing a token workflow before investing in heavier design-system infrastructure.

What it can do

  • Design tokens for colors, typography, spacing, borders, and more
  • Token aliases and multi-theme sets
  • JSON storage with GitHub and other sync providers
  • Applies tokens to properties Figma styles do not cover
  • Documentation site with guides and best practices
  • Open-source plugin under the MIT license

Setup

  1. Install the Tokens Studio for Figma plugin from the Figma Community.
  2. Define token sets for colors, typography, spacing, and other properties.
  3. Apply tokens to layers and styles in your Figma files.
  4. Connect a sync provider such as GitHub to store tokens as JSON.

Prerequisites

A Figma account; a GitHub account if you want token sync.

Trust score — 7/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 7/10 (TIER verified, metrics-v1). Evidence: open-source MIT repository with 1,600+ GitHub stars, actively maintained (pushed days before research), extensive public docs; formerly Figma Tokens with long track record. Strengths: open source and free, JSON-based tokens that flow into code, strong design-system community adoption. Docked for: (1) plugin-dependent on Figma's platform and API changes; (2) token application UX is less polished than native Figma variables for some workflows. License: MIT (open source).
