TinyURL
The original URL shortener, still running since 2002 with no account required.
About
TinyURL is the oldest notable URL shortener still operating, founded in 2002 by developer Kevin Gilbertson, who built it because long URLs kept breaking in emails on his unicycle forum (reported by the Associated Press in 2009). It does one thing with no friction: paste a long URL, get a short one, no signup needed, and links do not expire. Signed-in users get link history and custom aliases, and paid plans add branded domains and analytics: Pro runs $9.99 a month billed annually with 250 links a month and 3 branded domains, with Bulk and Team tiers above. Analytics cover clicks over time, referrer, geography, device, OS, browser, and language, retained for two years (per third-party product profiles). It is HTTPS throughout, but unlike Bitly it publishes no threat-detection system or compliance certifications.
TinyURL's staying power is its moat: links created two decades ago still resolve. The tradeoff is a dated experience and basic analytics next to modern link platforms, and the pricing ladder jumps from a $10 solo plan straight to bulk-API territory. No published independent benchmarks for reliability.

Trust score — 8/10
Scored 8/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: the 2002 founding by Kevin Gilbertson is reported by the Associated Press; third-party product profiles document the plan ladder (Pro $9.99/mo, 250 links, 3 domains) and two-year analytics retention. Strengths: unmatched longevity in the category, genuinely free no-signup shortening, links that do not expire. Docked for: (1) dated product experience and basic analytics versus modern platforms; (2) no published threat-detection or compliance posture; (3) the pricing ladder skips from solo straight to bulk tiers.
