Terramate

Orchestration and code generation for Terraform, OpenTofu, and Terragrunt.

About

Terramate is an open-source IaC orchestration layer that sits on top of Terraform, OpenTofu, and Terragrunt without replacing them. Its core primitive is the stack: it splits large monolithic state files into smaller units that deploy, get governed, and fail independently, with dependency ordering so stacks run in the right sequence. A code-generation engine then shares DRY configuration — backends, providers, locals — across all stacks from a single definition.

On top of the CLI, Terramate Cloud adds the platform layer: drift detection, deployment observability, asset inventory, and policy checks across every stack. The company pitches platform teams on productizing golden-path infrastructure once so developers and AI agents can self-serve it in minutes. The CLI is open source on GitHub with 3,600+ stars; Cloud is the commercial tier.

What it can do

  • Stack-based orchestration splitting monolithic state files
  • Code generation for DRY backends, providers, and locals
  • Dependency-ordered execution across hundreds of stacks
  • Drift detection, observability, and asset inventory via Terramate Cloud
  • CI/CD integration for GitHub Actions, GitLab, and others

Setup

Install the CLI (brew install terramate), then run terramate init in your IaC repo to start defining stacks.

Prerequisites

An existing Terraform, OpenTofu, or Terragrunt codebase.
