Temporal
The durable-execution platform behind mission-critical workflows — now the backbone of long-running AI agents.
About
Temporal is the platform that invented the durable-execution category: you write workflows as ordinary code in Go, Java, Python, TypeScript, .NET, or PHP, and the Temporal service guarantees they complete even across crashes, deploys, and datacenter outages. State is checkpointed at every step, timers and signals survive restarts, and the event history gives you a complete audit trail of everything a workflow ever did.
It earned its reputation running payment, booking, and logistics workflows at companies like Stripe, Netflix, and Snap, and the same properties map directly onto AI agents: multi-step tool loops that must not lose progress, human-in-the-loop approvals that wait days, and retries that must never double-execute a side effect. The server is MIT-licensed and self-hostable, with a managed Temporal Cloud for teams that don't want to run it. The honest cost is operational and conceptual: it is a distributed system with a real learning curve, and for simple cron-like work it is overkill.
What it can do
- Durable workflows as code: survive crashes, deploys, and outages without losing progress
- Signals, queries, timers, and versioning for long-running, human-in-the-loop processes
- Complete event history: full audit trail of every workflow execution
- Six SDKs: Go, Java, Python, TypeScript, .NET, PHP
- MIT-licensed server, self-hostable or via Temporal Cloud
- Web UI, CLI, and metrics for operating workflow fleets
Setup
- Start a dev server:
temporal server start-dev(or the Docker Compose stack for production). - Install an SDK for your language (
npm i @temporalio/client @temporalio/worker, etc.). - Write a Workflow (the durable orchestration logic) and Activities (the side-effecting steps).
- Run a Worker process that polls the task queue and executes them.
- Start executions from your app; watch history, signals, and timers in the Web UI.
Prerequisites
A Temporal service (local dev server, self-hosted cluster, or Temporal Cloud); one of the six language SDKs.

Trust score — 9/10
Scored 9/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: 23,732 GitHub stars (GitHub API), MIT, pushed Oct 15 2026; docs corroborate the workflow/activity model, signals, and versioning; production use at Stripe/Netflix/Snap is widely documented. Strengths: the category-defining durable-execution platform, huge community, genuinely open server. Docked for: (1) real operational and learning curve — overkill for simple jobs; (2) 1,064 open issues reflects scale as much as health. License: MIT.
