About

Tableau is Salesforce's enterprise business intelligence platform, long regarded as the standard for interactive data visualization. Since the Salesforce acquisition ($15.7B, 2019), it has pivoted toward what Salesforce calls agentic analytics, where AI surfaces insights proactively rather than waiting for users to build dashboards.

Tableau Agent (formerly Einstein Copilot for Tableau) is the conversational layer: users ask natural-language questions and get charts, calculated fields, and data prep steps generated automatically. Tableau Pulse delivers proactive metric monitoring with plain-language summaries of trends and anomalies, embeddable into dashboards and Slack. Dashboard Narratives (beta) auto-generates text overviews of entire dashboards. All generative features run through Salesforce's Einstein Trust Layer for data masking and governance.

Limitations are real: enterprise pricing is steep (a 25-user team typically starts around $20,000-25,000/year per third-party estimates), the Salesforce integration adds complexity, and onboarding non-technical users still takes effort despite the AI additions. Tableau Agent's strength is worksheet authoring; full dashboard support via narratives remains in beta.
