About

Synthesis Tutor is a conversational AI tutor that teaches K-5 math to children ages 5-11. It grew out of the experimental school Elon Musk and Josh Dahn ran on the SpaceX campus, and its lessons are designed by educators rather than handed off to a generic chatbot.

Kids talk through problems one-on-one, get instant tailored guidance, and only move on once they have actually mastered a concept. Parents like that up to seven children can share one plan, and the read-aloud, multi-sensory approach works well for neurodiverse learners. The trade-offs: it covers math only, stops at elementary level for now, and at $29/month it costs more than free alternatives like Khan Academy.

What it can do

  • One-on-one conversational math tutoring
  • Adaptive difficulty and reteaching
  • K-5 curriculum: counting through fractions
  • Read-aloud and multi-sensory support
  • Parent progress reports

Setup

  1. Go to synthesis.com and start the 7-day free trial.
  2. Create a parent account and add up to 7 child profiles.
  3. Each child takes a placement so the tutor starts at the right level.
  4. Kids practice independently on iPad, Chromebook, or desktop.

Prerequisites

Ages 5-11; iPad, Chromebook, or desktop computer.
