About

Sweep was one of the defining early bets on autonomous coding: a YC-backed GitHub App that turned issues into pull requests automatically. File an issue, label it, and Sweep would plan the change, generate patches across files, open a PR, and iterate on review comments and failing CI — reaching 7.7k GitHub stars on the premise of an AI junior developer. The founders later concluded full autonomy was years out and pivoted the company to a coding-assistant editor plugin, retiring the autonomous agent.

The honest picture: evaluate Sweep as it exists today, not as the 2023 demos promised. The issue-to-PR product is gone, and the current editor plugin competes in the most crowded lane in developer tools against Cursor, Copilot, and Windsurf. The story is still worth knowing — it is a case study in how fast the agent hype cycle repriced autonomy — but go in with current expectations, not historical ones.

What it can do

  • Issue-to-PR automation in the original product
  • Codebase analysis via dependency graphs and vector search
  • Iterative refinement from PR review comments
  • Automated test runs on generated changes

Setup

Check sweep.dev for the current editor plugin distribution and install it into your supported editor.
