Strands Agents SDK
AWS's open-source, model-driven SDK for building AI agents in a few lines of code.
About
Strands Agents is an open-source SDK from AWS, released in May 2025, that takes a model-driven approach to building and running AI agents: developers define a prompt and a list of tools in code, and the model decides which actions to take next. This contrasts with graph-driven frameworks like LangGraph, trading explicit workflow wiring for a lightweight model-delegated loop.
It ships for both Python and TypeScript, supports 20+ model providers, has native MCP tool support, and integrates with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore for enterprise deployments. AWS reports 14M+ SDK downloads, and later updates added edge-device support, steering (experimental modular prompting), and evaluations in preview, plus a Strands Labs GitHub org for experimental projects.
What it can do
- Build an agent from a prompt + tool list in a few lines of code
- Use any of 20+ model providers with the same API
- Native MCP tool integration and Bedrock AgentCore deployment
- Run agents on edge devices with local model providers
Setup
pip install strands-agents (Python) or npm install @strands-agents/sdk (TypeScript); no signup required.
Prerequisites
Python 3.10+ or Node 18+, an API key for your chosen model provider (or Bedrock/AWS credentials).
