About

Stoplight is a design-first API platform built around a visual editor for OpenAPI specifications. Designers and developers collaborate on specs without hand-writing YAML, publish interactive documentation, spin up automatic mock servers, and enforce API style guides and governance across an organization's API portfolio.

SmartBear acquired Stoplight in August 2023 and has been integrating its capabilities into SwaggerHub and its API Hub offering. The Stoplight platform is still sold as of late 2026, but the open-source tooling is the safest long-term bet: Spectral (linting), Prism (mock servers), and Elements (documentation components) are all Apache-2.0 licensed and saw commits through September 2026. Independent analysts note slowing platform development and recommend getting the roadmap in writing before renewing.

What it can do

  • Visual no-code editor for OpenAPI specifications
  • Interactive hosted API documentation
  • Automatic mock servers from specs
  • API style guides and governance rules
  • Open-source Spectral, Prism, and Elements (Apache-2.0)

Setup

Use the hosted Studio editor or pull the open-source Spectral, Prism, and Elements packages into your own workflow.
