Starship
The minimal, fast, cross-shell prompt that only shows the context you need.
About
Starship is an open-source prompt for any shell, written in Rust and maintained by a community of contributors under the starship GitHub organization. Where a traditional prompt is either plain or a slow tangle of shell functions, Starship renders context modules in compiled code: the current directory, Git branch and status, language runtime versions (Node, Python, Rust, Go, and dozens more), cloud and Kubernetes context, Docker context, and command duration all appear automatically, and only when they are relevant to the directory you are in.
Configuration is a single TOML file at ~/.config/starship.toml, and dozens of community preset themes ship on the official site, so you can go from stock to a polished prompt in minutes. Setup is one line in your shell rc, such as eval "$(starship init bash)" for Bash, with support for Zsh, Fish, PowerShell, Nushell, Elvish, Ion, Tcsh, Cmd, and Xonsh across Linux, macOS, Windows, and BSD. The project bills itself as blazing fast, which is provider-claimed; there are no published independent benchmarks, though the Rust architecture and ~60,000 GitHub stars suggest the claim is widely accepted by its users. You will want a Nerd Font installed for the icons to render.
What it can do
- Cross-shell prompt: Bash, Zsh, Fish, PowerShell, Nushell, Elvish, Ion, Tcsh, Cmd, Xonsh
- Context-aware modules shown only when relevant
- Git branch, status, and commit info in the prompt
- Language and toolchain version detection (Node, Python, Rust, Go, and more)
- Cloud context modules (AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker)
- Command duration and exit-status display
- Single TOML configuration file with dozens of preset themes
- Nerd Font icon rendering
- Linux, macOS, Windows, BSD, and Termux support
Setup
Install the binary with the official install script (curl -sS https://starship.rs/install.sh | sh) or via your package manager (Homebrew, apt, Scoop, etc.). Then add the init line for your shell to your rc file: eval "$(starship init bash)" for Bash, eval "$(starship init zsh)" for Zsh, starship init fish | source for Fish, or the PowerShell equivalent. Optional: create ~/.config/starship.toml or drop in a preset theme.
Prerequisites
A supported shell (Bash, Zsh, Fish, PowerShell, Nushell, and more); a Nerd Font for full icon rendering.

Trust score — 9/10
Scored 9/10 (metrics tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: ~60.3k GitHub stars with commits pushed October 16, 2026; the official site and multiple independent guides confirm the cross-shell support list, TOML configuration, context-aware modules, and one-line shell init setup. Strengths: enormous adoption, genuinely shell-agnostic core binary, active maintenance, thorough documentation. Docked for: (1) the "blazing fast" claim is provider-claimed with no published independent benchmarks; (2) full icon rendering requires a Nerd Font, an extra setup step; (3) deep customization can produce a complex TOML file.
