Split
Mature feature-flag and experimentation platform — acquired by Harness, now Harness FME.
Acquired — still operating
Acquired by Harness (June 2024); product now Harness Feature Management & Experimentation (FME).
About
Split was a feature management and experimentation platform founded in 2015, known for pairing feature flags with real-time measurement of business impact: every flag could be tied to metrics, with alerting and kill switches when a release moved the numbers the wrong way. It was one of the most mature standalone tools in the category.
On June 11, 2024, Harness completed its acquisition of Split and folded it into the Harness platform as Feature Management & Experimentation (FME). Split is no longer sold standalone; you enable FME as a module inside a Harness account. The SDKs, concepts, and much of the documentation still carry the Split name (@splitsoftware/splitio packages, SplitFactory), and Harness has added warehouse-native experimentation and integrated pipelines since the acquisition. Note: 'split' and the existing 'harness' catalog entries are distinct — this covers the Split lineage specifically.
What it can do
- Feature flags with attribute-based targeting and segments
- Experimentation with real-time impact measurement and alerting
- Kill switches and automatic rollback signals
- Warehouse-native experimentation (post-acquisition)
- OpenFeature provider support; SDKs across web, mobile, server
Setup
Enable Feature Management & Experimentation inside a Harness account; migrate Split SDK keys per Harness docs.
Prerequisites
A Harness account — Split is no longer sold or usable as a standalone product.
Use cases
Works with
Trust score — 7/10
Scored 7/10 (VERIFIED tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: founded 2015, acquisition by Harness on June 11, 2024 confirmed by Harness's own FAQ; product now lives as Harness FME with continued investment (warehouse-native experimentation, Experiment Workflows at Flagship 2025). Strengths: mature flag + measurement engine, SDKs still Split-branded and working, now inside a full software-delivery platform. Docked for: (1) no standalone product — requires a Harness account; (2) migration in motion, so some docs and naming are in flux; (3) bundling means pricing is platform-level, not per-flag. License: proprietary SaaS, closed-source.
