About

Snagit is TechSmith's screen capture and short-form recording tool, made by the same company behind Camtasia and operating since 1987. Capture an image or a quick video, then mark it up in the built-in editor with arrows, callouts, numbered steps, and templates designed for how-to guides, bug reports, design feedback, and walkthroughs. Panoramic capture stitches scrolling content, text grab pulls editable text out of a screenshot, and one-click sharing pushes to Slack, Google Drive, YouTube, and TechSmith Screencast. TechSmith says Snagit is used across every Fortune 500 company, a provider claim about adoption rather than a verified census.

The pricing model changed to subscription: an individual plan runs about $39 a year and includes a year of updates, with Teams and Education tiers above. One license covers both Windows and Mac, but there is no Linux build and the app stops working when the subscription lapses. It is the safe corporate default rather than the most powerful or the cheapest option.

What it can do

  • Image capture (region, window, panoramic scrolling) and short video recording
  • Editor with arrows, callouts, step numbering, blur, and ready-made templates
  • Text grab: copy editable text from any screenshot
  • Screen draw and annotations during recording
  • One-click sharing to Slack, Google Drive, YouTube, Box, Screencast
  • Media library that keeps every capture findable whether or not you saved it
  • Integrations with Camtasia for longer video workflows

Trust score — 8/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 8/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: TechSmith operates since 1987, third-party reviews confirm the $39/year individual plan with Windows/Mac coverage, text grab, panoramic capture, and broad sharing integrations; the Fortune-500 adoption figure is provider-claimed. Strengths: the most polished explain-it-with-a-screenshot workflow, corporate IT friendly, strong template library. Docked for: (1) subscription licensing with no perpetual option and no Linux build; (2) the app stops working if the subscription lapses; (3) closed source with no independent performance benchmarks. License: proprietary.
