Prisma
TypeScript-first ORM and managed Postgres built for AI-era app development.
About
Prisma is the dominant TypeScript ORM, pairing a declarative schema language and type-safe query client with a growing managed data platform. Prisma Postgres ships with pgvector and other Postgres extensions enabled, which makes the same database that stores application rows usable as a vector store for RAG and agent memory. The 2026 ORM Manifesto pushed the project toward an extension model where each database gets first-class support built with the community.
The managed platform (Prisma Postgres plus Prisma Compute) has become a default backend for vibe-coded apps: one project provisions the app runtime and the database together, with per-branch preview databases and usage-based pricing. Prisma raised a $40M Series B in 2022 led by Altimeter with participation from GitHub, Vercel and Kleiner Perkins founders and backers. The ORM repo passed 47,000 GitHub stars by late 2026 (per GitHub; approximate).
What it can do
- Type-safe database client generated from a declarative schema
- Prisma Postgres: managed Postgres with pgvector, connection pooling and backups
- Prisma Compute: TypeScript app hosting colocated with the database
- Migrate: versioned schema migrations; Studio: visual data browser
Setup
npm install prisma @prisma/client, then npx prisma init; or create a project at prisma.io for managed Postgres.
Prerequisites
Node.js 18+, a Postgres database (self-hosted or Prisma Postgres).
