OpenVINO
Intel's open-source toolkit for optimized AI inference across CPU, iGPU, NPU, and Arc GPUs.
About
OpenVINO is Intel's inference toolkit for running AI on the x86 silicon you already own: CPU, integrated GPU, Core Ultra NPUs, and Arc discrete GPUs. Models are converted to OpenVINO IR and compiled per device (or AUTO, which distributes work across them). For generative AI, OpenVINO GenAI provides LLM and VLM pipelines with features like speculative decoding and paged-attention continuous batching, while NNCF handles INT8/INT4 compression.
Releases ship quarterly (2025.0 through 2025.4, with 2026.0 adding an NPU ahead-of-time compiler), and the ecosystem includes hundreds of learning notebooks, the openvinotoolkit/openvino repo, and ready-to-use INT4 models on Hugging Face via optimum-intel. OpenVINO Model Server (OVMS) wraps it all in an HTTP/gRPC serving layer for edge servers.
Honest limitations: on raw throughput it trails a dedicated GPU card for heavy workloads, and the toolchain has breaking changes in flight (the legacy Model Optimizer, openvino-dev package, and Open Model Zoo are deprecated or removed, so older tutorials may mislead). It is also an Intel-first stack, so non-Intel accelerators are second-class citizens.
What it can do
- Optimized inference across Intel CPU, iGPU, NPU, and Arc GPUs
- OpenVINO GenAI LLM/VLM pipelines with speculative decoding and continuous batching
- NNCF INT8/INT4 quantization plus OVMS for HTTP/gRPC model serving
Setup
pip install openvino and openvino-genai, convert a model to OpenVINO IR (or pull a prebuilt INT4 model from Hugging Face), then compile for your device.
Prerequisites
Intel CPU/GPU/NPU hardware for the accelerated path; a model convertible to OpenVINO IR.
