OpenCode

The open-source AI coding agent built for the terminal

Visit official site →

About

OpenCode is a terminal-first, MIT-licensed AI coding agent (~213k GitHub stars, among the most-starred in its category): a polished TUI plus headless server that plans, edits files, and runs commands with the model of your choice. It is bring-your-own-model across 75+ providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter, local OpenAI-compatible runtimes via the Models.dev catalog), supports sign-in with existing subscriptions (e.g. GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT Plus/Pro), integrates language servers for symbol-level code intelligence, and offers plan mode, parallel agents, shareable sessions, plugins, plus a desktop app (beta) and IDE extensions.

⚠️ Repository note: the project moved from sst/opencode to anomalyco/opencode in January 2026 when SST rebranded to Anomaly; the old path redirects. Do not confuse it with opencode-ai/opencode, an unrelated archived project whose author continued it as Crush.

What it can do

  • • Polished terminal TUI + headless `opencode serve` mode with an SDK
  • • 75+ model providers via the Models.dev catalog; bring your own keys or subscription logins
  • • Built-in `build` and `plan` agents (Tab to switch), plus a `general` subagent
  • • LSP integration for symbol-level code intelligence
  • • Parallel sessions, plan mode, plugins, shareable session links
  • • Reads AGENTS.md / CLAUDE.md / .claude/skills/ conventions
  • • Desktop app (beta) and IDE extensions alongside the terminal
  • • Session stats, export, and local-only data by default

Setup

  1. Install via the official script: curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/install | bash — or npm i -g @opencode/cli@latest, brew install anomalyco/tap/opencode, Scoop/Chocolatey (Windows), Pacman/AUR (Arch), mise use -g opencode, or Nix.
  2. cd into your project directory and run opencode to launch the TUI.
  3. Choose your model provider and authenticate — via API key or by signing in with a supported subscription (e.g. GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT Plus/Pro).
  4. Configure defaults in ~/.config/opencode/opencode.json (providers, models, permissions, small-model fallback).
  5. OpenCode reads existing AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, and .claude/skills/ files automatically; press Tab to switch between the build (full access) and plan (read-only) agents.
  6. Privacy tip: the built-in opencode (Zen) provider auto-loads free models routed through OpenCode's hosted service — remove or ignore it in config if you want everything to stay on your own providers.

Prerequisites

A terminal; a model provider API key or a supported subscription login (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT Plus/Pro, etc.). Optional: language servers for LSP-powered navigation; Docker/Node tooling only if your project needs it.
