About

Onyx (formerly Danswer) is an open-source enterprise search and AI assistant platform that gives teams a ChatGPT-style interface grounded in their own knowledge. It connects to more than 40 workplace data sources — Slack, Google Drive, Confluence, GitHub, Salesforce, Zendesk — and answers natural-language questions with citations, backed by a Vespa-based search engine and your choice of LLM.

Founded by Chris Weaver and Yuhong Sun, the project was open-sourced in 2023 and renamed from Danswer to Onyx in 2025. The community edition is MIT-licensed and deployable anywhere — a laptop, on-prem, or cloud — so user data and chats stay under your control, with paid tiers adding SSO, encryption, and admin features. Companies can get it running in about 30 minutes, which made it the open-source answer to well-funded competitors like Glean.

What it can do

  • Natural-language chat over 40+ workplace connectors
  • Hybrid search with Vespa plus LLM-grounded answers
  • Configurable AI assistants with roles and permissions
  • Self-hosted deployment with full data control

Setup

Deploy via Docker Compose per the docs, connect your data sources, and choose an LLM provider.

Prerequisites

A server or laptop for self-hosting; API keys for your chosen LLM and connected apps.
