About

Omnivore was the open-source read-it-later app for people who like text, launched in 2021 by Jackson Harper and Hongbo Wu. It was fully featured: highlighting, PDF and offline support, web/iOS/Android apps, extensions for every major browser, newsletters and RSS in the same inbox, and text-to-speech powered by ElevenLabs voices, which became one of its most popular features.

On October 29, 2024 the team announced it was joining ElevenLabs, and about two weeks later, on November 15, the hosted service shut down and user data was deleted, with an export window that closed November 16. The founders committed that the codebase would remain 100% open source, and it does: the AGPL-3.0 code sits on GitHub with over 16,000 stars, and a small community fork at omnivore.work keeps it self-hostable. The team's reader work continues inside ElevenLabs' ElevenReader. Listed here as a reference entry and a cautionary tale about venture-backed reading apps, not as a service you can sign up for.

What it can do

  • Full read-it-later workflow: save, highlight, annotate, archive
  • Newsletters and RSS feeds in the same inbox
  • Text-to-speech, originally powered by ElevenLabs voices
  • PDF support and offline reading
  • Web, iOS, and Android clients plus browser extensions
  • Fully open source (AGPL-3.0) and self-hostable
  • Community fork continues at omnivore.work

Setup

The hosted service is gone. Self-host from the open-source code at github.com/omnivore-app/omnivore or via the community fork at omnivore.work.

Prerequisites

Docker-capable server for self-hosting. No account or hosted option remains.

Trust score — 5/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 5/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: TechCrunch confirmed the October 2024 ElevenLabs team move and November 15, 2024 shutdown with data deletion; GitHub API confirms 16,283 stars under AGPL-3.0 on the archived codebase; a community fork exists at omnivore.work. Strengths: the code remains fully open and self-hostable with a strong feature set. Docked for: (1) the hosted service no longer exists, so this is a reference entry, not a usable product; (2) the codebase is unmaintained upstream; (3) self-hosting an archived project carries security-update risk. License: AGPL-3.0.
