Mentat
Open-source terminal AI coding assistant that edits across many files at once.
About
Mentat is an open-source AI coding assistant from Abante AI that runs in your terminal. Unlike autocomplete-style assistants, it reads the files you name into context and applies coordinated edits across many files and locations in one pass, which suits refactors and multi-file changes better than chat copy-paste.
It is git-based: you run mentat with paths to files or directories inside a git repo, and it works through them with model providers including OpenAI, Azure, and Ollama. Install it from PyPI with pip install mentat. Note that the public release appears to have stalled since early 2025, so treat it as a hackable open-source CLI rather than an actively evolving product.
