MCP Memory Server

Official MCP reference server giving agents a persistent knowledge graph across sessions.

Visit official site →

About

The official reference MCP server for persistent memory. It maintains a local knowledge graph (entities, relations, observations) stored as JSONL, letting agents remember facts across sessions without any external service or network access.

Because it is fully local with no network surface, it is one of the lowest-risk MCP servers to deploy — the main operational concern is that the memory file grows unboundedly over long use.

What it can do

  • Entity/relation/observation knowledge graph
  • Persistent across sessions in local JSONL
  • Fully local — no network calls, no API keys
  • Add, search, and delete memory operations

Setup

  1. Install Node.js 18+.
  2. Add to your MCP client config: command npx, args ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-memory"] (Docker image also available).
  3. Restart the client; memory persists in a local JSONL file.

Prerequisites

An MCP-compatible client; Node.js 18+ or Docker.

Trust score — 9/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 9/10 (verified tier). Official reference implementation, ~91k monorepo stars, actively maintained, npx install verified. Docked for the mixed license state (MIT→Apache-2.0 transition). Genuinely low risk: fully local storage, no credentials, no network surface — the only caveat is unbounded JSONL growth over long sessions.
