Kubeflow
Open-source ML platform that runs the full model lifecycle on Kubernetes.
About
Kubeflow is an open-source platform for deploying, managing, and scaling machine learning workflows on Kubernetes, covering the ML lifecycle from experimentation to production. Its component stack maps closely to managed clouds: Kubeflow Pipelines (KFP) for DAG-based workflow orchestration, Kubeflow Trainer for distributed PyTorch/JAX/XGBoost training, Katib for hyperparameter tuning, plus a model registry, notebook servers (JupyterLab, VS Code, RStudio), and KServe for serverless model serving.
Originating at Google and now community-driven, Kubeflow's main appeal is the self-hosted alternative to Vertex AI or Azure ML: no per-minute compute charges, data stays in your own cluster, and it runs on any cloud or on-premises. The trade-off is operational weight — it expects real Kubernetes expertise, a multi-node cluster, and comfort with Kustomize-based deployment, so it suits platform teams rather than individual experimenters.
What it can do
- Kubeflow Pipelines for portable, scalable ML pipelines
- Distributed training operators for PyTorch, JAX, XGBoost
- Katib automated hyperparameter tuning
- KServe serverless model serving with canary deployments
- Notebook servers with JupyterLab, VS Code, and RStudio
Setup
Deploy onto a Kubernetes cluster (1.31+, 3+ nodes recommended) via Kustomize manifests from the Kubeflow manifests repo; kubectl and a default StorageClass required.
Prerequisites
A Kubernetes cluster, kubectl, Kustomize 5.4+, and ML/Python familiarity.
