Kubecost
Real-time Kubernetes cost allocation and FinOps, now inside IBM's FinOps Suite.
Acquired — still operating
acquired by IBM Sep 2024; folded into Apptio FinOps
About
Kubecost is a Kubernetes cost-monitoring and optimization platform founded in 2019. It runs as an in-cluster agent stack combining Kubernetes telemetry with cloud-provider billing data to deliver real-time cost allocation by namespace, label, service, or workload, plus rightsizing recommendations, budget alerts, and governance reporting. It is built on OpenCost, the vendor-neutral open-source project Kubecost created that now lives as a CNCF sandbox project.
In September 2024 IBM acquired Kubecost and folded it into the IBM Apptio FinOps Suite alongside Cloudability and Turbonomic, with customers including Allianz, Audi, Rakuten, and GitLab. Limitations: the IBM acquisition shifted positioning toward enterprise FinOps procurement and multi-cluster pricing is a common concern; optimization recommendations still require engineering time to act on; and teams wanting pure open source should use OpenCost directly instead.
What it can do
- Real-time cost allocation
- Rightsizing recommendations
- Budget alerts and governance
- Built on OpenCost
- Multi-cloud and on-prem support
- IBM Apptio FinOps Suite integration
Setup
